“But if they intend to deceive you, Allah is surely sufficient for you. He is the One who supported you with His help and with the believers, and brought their hearts together. Had you spent all that is on earth, you could not have brought their hearts together, but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Almighty, All-Wise. O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.”
“But if they intend to deceive you, Allah is surely sufficient for you”—that is, He will protect you from whatever may harm you. He oversees all that benefits and concerns you. There has already been granted [to you], through His protection and support, that which reassures your heart.
For “He is the One who supported you with His help and with the believers.” That is, He aided you with heavenly assistance—His own support, which nothing can withstand—and with the assistance of the believers, whom He brought forth to support you.
“And brought their hearts together”: they united and became harmonious, and their strength increased because of their unity. This was not achieved through anyone’s efforts or by any power other than Allah’s. Even if you had spent everything on earth—gold, silver, and all else—to reconcile them after such intense estrangement and division, “you could not have brought their hearts together,” for none but Allah Most High has the power to turn hearts.
“But Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Almighty, All-Wise.” One manifestation of His might is that He brought their hearts together and united them after their division, as Allah Most High says: “Remember Allah’s favor upon you when you were enemies, and He brought your hearts together, so that by His favor you became brothers. You were on the brink of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it.”
Allah Most High then says: “O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you”—that is, He suffices you—“and for the believers who follow you”; that is, He also suffices your believing followers. This is Allah’s promise to His believing servants who follow His Messenger that He will suffice them and grant them victory over their enemies.
Thus, when they fulfill the condition of faith and obedience, He will assuredly suffice them in all matters of religion and worldly life that concern them. His sufficiency fails to manifest only when its condition is absent.
