(26) “Remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that the people might snatch you away. Then He gave you refuge, strengthened you with His aid, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.”
Allah Most High reminds His servants of His favor upon them: He granted them victory after humiliation, increased their numbers after they had been few, and enriched them after poverty.
“Remember when you were few and oppressed in the land”—that is, subjugated under the rule of others—“fearing that the people might snatch you away,” meaning that they might seize you.
“Then He gave you refuge, strengthened you with His aid, and provided you with good things.” He gave you a land in which to seek refuge, exacted vengeance upon your enemies through you, and enabled you to take enough of their wealth as spoils to make you rich.
“So that you might be grateful” to Allah for His immense favor and perfect beneficence by worshipping Him and associating nothing with Him.
