(179) “We have indeed created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle—indeed, they are even further astray. It is they who are heedless.”
Allah Most High says, explaining the great number of those who go astray and follow the accursed Satan: “We have indeed created”—that is, brought into existence and spread abroad—“for Hell many of the jinn and mankind,” so much so that beasts are better off than they are.
“They have hearts with which they do not understand”; that is, no true understanding or knowledge reaches those hearts beyond what merely establishes the proof against them.
“And they have eyes with which they do not see” what would benefit them; rather, they have forfeited the benefit and purpose of their sight.
“And they have ears with which they do not hear” in such a way that the meaning of what they hear reaches their hearts.
“They”—those possessing these vile qualities—“are like cattle”; that is, beasts devoid of reason. These people preferred what perishes over what endures and were therefore stripped of the distinguishing quality of reason.
“Indeed, they are even further astray” than beasts, for cattle serve the purpose for which they were created, and they possess faculties by which they distinguish what harms them from what benefits them. Thus, cattle are better off than they are.
“It is they who are heedless”: those who are heedless of the most beneficial of all things—faith in Allah, obedience to Him, and remembrance of Him.
Hearts, hearing, and sight were created for them so that these faculties might assist them in fulfilling Allah’s commands and His rights, but they used them for the very opposite of that purpose.
Such people truly deserve to be among those whom Allah created for Hell and made for it. He created them for the Fire, and they perform the deeds of the people of the Fire.
As for those who employ these faculties in worshipping Allah, whose hearts are imbued with faith in Allah and love for Him, and who are not heedless of Allah—they are the people of Paradise, and they perform the deeds of the people of Paradise.
