(60) “And remember when Moses prayed for water for his people, and We said, ‘Strike the stone with your staff.’ Thereupon twelve springs gushed forth from it, and each group knew its own drinking place. ‘Eat and drink from Allah’s provision, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.’”
“Prayed for water” means that he asked for water for them to drink.
“And We said, ‘Strike the stone with your staff’”—either a particular stone known to him, or “stone” as a generic noun. “Thereupon twelve springs gushed forth from it,” corresponding to the twelve tribes of the Children of Israel. “Each group” among them “knew its own drinking place,” meaning the place at which they drank from those springs. Thus, they did not crowd one another but drank with ease and contentment. Hence He said, “Eat and drink from Allah’s provision,” meaning what He granted you without effort or toil, “and do not go about spreading corruption in the land,” meaning: do not cause ruin by spreading corruption.
