Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(37) “Then Adam received.”

“Then Adam received”—that is, he eagerly grasped and learned—and Allah inspired him with “words from his Lord,” namely: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves,” to the end of the verse. Thus, he acknowledged his sin and asked Allah to forgive him, “so Allah turned to him in forgiveness” and had mercy on him. “Indeed, He alone is the Accepter of Repentance” for those who repent to Him and turn back to Him.

Allah’s turning to His servants in forgiveness is of two kinds: first, He enables them to repent; second, He accepts their repentance once its conditions have been fulfilled.

“The Most Merciful” to His servants. It is part of His mercy toward them that He enables them to repent, pardons them, and overlooks their sins.
