“When it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ they say, ‘Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers following.’ Even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided?”
Thus, when they are called “to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,” they turn away and refuse to accept it, saying, “Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers following” in religion—even if it was unsound and not a religion that could save them from Allah’s punishment.
Had their forefathers possessed sufficient knowledge and understanding, the matter would have been less serious. But their forefathers understood nothing; that is, they possessed neither sound reason nor any knowledge or guidance. Ruin, then, be upon anyone who blindly follows those who possess neither sound knowledge nor sound judgment, and abandons following what Allah has revealed and following His messengers—a path that fills hearts with knowledge, faith, guidance, and certainty.
