(92) “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and beware. But if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger’s duty is only to convey the message clearly.”
Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger are one and the same. Whoever obeys Allah has obeyed the Messenger, and whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah. This encompasses carrying out everything Allah and His Messenger have commanded, including outward and inward deeds and words, whether obligatory or recommended and whether pertaining to the rights of Allah or the rights of His creation. It likewise encompasses refraining from everything Allah and His Messenger have forbidden.
This is the most comprehensive of all commands, for, as you can see, it encompasses every command and prohibition, outward and inward. His words, “and beware,” mean: beware of disobeying Allah and His Messenger, for therein lie evil and manifest loss. “But if you turn away”—from what you have been commanded to do and forbidden to do—“then know that Our Messenger’s duty is only to convey the message clearly.” He has indeed done so. If you accept guidance, it is for your own benefit, and if you do evil, it is to your own detriment. Allah is the One who will call you to account; the Messenger has fulfilled his duty and discharged that with which he was entrusted.
