(28) He, exalted is He, then says: “How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then bring you back to life, and then to Him you will be returned.”
This question expresses amazement, rebuke, and condemnation. That is: How can you disbelieve in Allah, who brought you into being from nonexistence, bestowed every kind of blessing upon you, will cause you to die when your appointed terms have run their course, requite you in your graves, then bring you to life after the resurrection and rising, whereupon you will be returned to Him and He will recompense you in full? Since you are subject to His control and governance, surrounded by His beneficence, bound by His religious commands, and thereafter subject to His judgment of recompense, does it befit you to disbelieve in Him? Is this anything but profound ignorance, foolishness, and stupidity (1)? Rather, what befits you is to believe in Him, be mindful of Him, thank Him, fear His punishment, and hope for His reward.
