Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(76) “Say, ‘Do you worship besides Allah those who have no power either to harm or benefit you, while Allah is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing?’”

That is: “Say” to them, O Messenger: “Do you worship besides Allah” needy and dependent created beings “who have no power either to harm or benefit you,” while forsaking the One who alone has power over harm and benefit, giving and withholding? “Allah is the All-Hearing” of every voice, despite the diversity of languages and the variety of needs, and “the All-Knowing” of outward and inward matters, the unseen and the visible, and all that is past and yet to come. Thus, the Perfect One—Most Exalted is He—whose attributes are such, alone deserves to be singled out for every form of worship and to have religion devoted sincerely to Him.
