(174, 175) “O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light. * As for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him, He will admit them into mercy and bounty from Him and guide them to Himself along a straight path.”
Allah Most High reminds all people of His favor in bringing them conclusive proofs and radiant lights. He thereby establishes the proof against them and makes the path clear to them. He says: “O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord”; that is, decisive evidence establishing the truth, making it clear, and exposing its opposite.
This includes both rational and revealed evidence, as well as the signs in the horizons and within themselves: “We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.”
The words “from your Lord” indicate the nobility and greatness of this proof, for it comes from your Lord, who has nurtured you in both your religious and worldly affairs. Among the ways He nurtures you—for which He deserves praise and thanks—is that He has brought you clear proofs by which to guide you to the straight path and to the Gardens of Bliss.
“And We have sent down to you a clear light.” This is the glorious Quran, which contains the knowledge of former and later generations, true and beneficial accounts, commands to observe all justice, excellence, and goodness, and prohibitions against every injustice and evil. People remain in darkness unless they seek illumination from its lights, and in profound misery unless they draw from its goodness.
Yet people are divided into two groups according to their faith in the Quran and the benefit they derive from it:
“As for those who believe in Allah”; that is, they acknowledge His existence, affirm that He possesses every perfect attribute, and declare Him free of every deficiency and fault. “And hold fast to Him”; that is, they seek refuge in Allah, rely upon Him, renounce reliance on their own power and strength, and seek their Lord’s aid. “He will admit them into mercy and bounty from Him”; that is, He will envelop them in His special mercy, enable them to perform good deeds, grant them abundant rewards, and ward off afflictions and all that they dislike.
“And guide them to Himself along a straight path”; that is, He will enable them to acquire knowledge and act upon it—to recognize the truth and live by it.
Conversely, those who do not believe in Allah, hold fast to Him, and adhere to His Book will be denied His mercy and deprived of His bounty. He will leave them to themselves, so they will not be guided but will instead stray into manifest error as punishment for abandoning faith. Thus, disappointment and deprivation will befall them. We ask Allah Most High for pardon, well-being, and protection from affliction.
