(144) “O you who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah clear proof against yourselves?”
After mentioning that one of the hypocrites’ characteristics is taking the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers, Allah forbids His believing servants from adopting this reprehensible trait and resembling the hypocrites. Doing so would cause you to “give Allah clear proof against yourselves”—that is, an evident justification for punishing you. He has warned us against it, cautioned us about it, and informed us of the evils it entails; therefore, pursuing it after this warrants punishment.
This verse demonstrates the perfection of Allah’s justice and that Allah does not punish anyone before the proof has been established against him. It also contains a warning against sins, for whoever commits them gives Allah clear proof against himself.
