(87) “Allah—there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He will surely gather you all for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful in speech than Allah?”
The Exalted declares that He alone possesses absolute oneness and that none is worthy of worship or devotion except Him, because He is perfect in His essence and attributes, because He alone creates and governs, and because He alone bestows blessings, both manifest and hidden.
This necessarily entails the command to worship Him and draw near to Him through every form of servitude, for He alone deserves this and will recompense His servants for whatever worship of Him they performed or neglected. He therefore swears that the occasion of recompense—the Day of Resurrection—will certainly come to pass, saying, “He will surely gather you all”—the first of you and the last of you—in a single place,
“for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt.” That is, there can be no doubt or uncertainty about it whatsoever, as established by both rational and revealed evidence. The rational evidence includes what we witness of the earth being brought back to life after its death; the existence of the first creation, which makes a second creation all the more evidently possible; and the divine wisdom which confirms that Allah did not create His creatures in vain, merely to live and then die. As for the revealed evidence, it is the declaration of the most truthful of all who speak—and, indeed, His oath affirming it. Thus He says, “And who is more truthful in speech than Allah?” Likewise, elsewhere in the Quran He commanded His Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—to swear that it will occur, as in His words: “Those who disbelieve claim that they will never be resurrected. Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected; then you will surely be informed of what you did. That is easy for Allah.’”
