(176–177) “Do not let those who hasten into disbelief grieve you. They will never harm Allah in the least. Allah intends to grant them no share in the Hereafter, and they will have a tremendous punishment. * Indeed, those who purchased disbelief at the price of faith will never harm Allah in the least, and they will have a painful punishment.”
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was deeply concerned for people and strove earnestly to guide them. He would grieve when they did not accept guidance. Allah the Exalted said: “Do not let those who hasten into disbelief grieve you”—such was their intense desire and eagerness for it. “They will never harm Allah in the least.” Allah will grant victory to His religion, support His Messenger, and carry out His command without them. So pay them no heed and give them no concern. They harm only themselves and strive toward their own ruin by forfeiting faith in this world and incurring painful punishment in the Hereafter. This is because of their lowliness before Allah, their loss of all standing in His sight, and His will to grant them no share of His reward in the Hereafter. He forsook them and did not enable them to attain what He enabled ⦗158⦘ His allies and those for whom He willed good to attain. This was out of His justice and wisdom, for He knew that they were unfit for guidance and unreceptive to right direction because of their corrupt character and evil intentions.
He then stated that those who chose disbelief over faith and desired it as a person spends beloved wealth to purchase desirable goods “will never harm Allah in the least.” Rather, the harm caused by their deeds returns upon themselves. Hence He said: “And they will have a painful punishment.” How could they possibly harm Allah when they utterly spurned faith and eagerly embraced disbelief in the Most Merciful? Allah has no need of them. In their place, He has appointed other righteous and pure servants to uphold His religion, and from among those whom He has chosen to support it, He has prepared men of keen insight, sound reason, deep understanding, and great mettle. Allah the Exalted said: “Say, ‘Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall upon their faces in prostration,’” and the verses that follow.
