(90โ91) โIndeed, those who disbelieve after having believed and then increase in disbeliefโtheir repentance will never be accepted. It is they who are astray. Indeed, those who disbelieve and die as disbelieversโnot even an earthful of gold would be accepted from any one of them, even if he offered it as ransom. They will have a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.โ
The Exalted informs us that whoever disbelieves after having believed and then adds further disbelief to his disbeliefโpersisting in error and misguidance and continuing to forsake sound judgment and guidanceโhis repentance will not be accepted. That is, such people will not be enabled to offer repentance that would be accepted; rather, Allah leaves them to wander blindly in their transgression. The Exalted says: โWe turn their hearts and their eyes away, just as they refused to believe in it the first time,โ and: โWhen they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.โ Thus, evil deeds breed one another, especially in the case of someone who commits the gravest disbelief and abandons the straight path after the proof has been established against him and Allah has made the signs and proofs clear to him. Such a person has actively severed himself from the means leading to his Lordโs mercy and closed the door of repentance upon himself.
For this reason, Allah confines misguidance to this category, saying: โIt is they who are astray.โ What misguidance could be greater than that of one who knowingly abandons the path? If these disbelievers persist in their disbelief until death, their destruction and everlasting misery become inevitable, and nothing will benefit them. Even if one of them were to offer an earthful of gold to ransom himself from Allahโs punishment, it would be of no avail. Rather, they will remain in the painful punishment, with no intercessor, helper, rescuer, or protector to deliver them from Allahโs punishment. They will despair of every good and become certain that they will abide forever under punishment and wrath. We seek refuge in Allah from their condition.
