Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(83) “Do they seek a religion other than Allah’s, when all those in the heavens and on earth submit to Him, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be returned?”

That is: Do those who seek and desire truly seek a religion other than Allah’s? This is neither right nor fitting, for no religion is better than Allah’s religion. “All those in the heavens and on earth submit to Him, willingly or unwillingly.” That is, all creation is subject to His control and submits to Him. Some do so willingly and by choice: they are the believing Muslims who submit themselves to the worship of their Lord. Others do so unwillingly: they are the rest of creation. Even the disbelievers are subject to His decree and predestination; they can neither escape nor resist them. To Him all creatures will return, and He will judge between them and recompense them according to His judgment, which is always founded upon grace and justice.
