(59–60) “Indeed, the likeness of Jesus before Allah is like that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was. * The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.”
Allah Most High informs us of this by way of argument against the Christians, who wrongfully make claims about Jesus—peace be upon him—without any proof or even plausible basis. They claim that because he had no father, he thereby merited being the son of Allah or a partner with Allah in Lordship. Yet this is not even a plausible argument, much less a proof. His creation in this manner is one of Allah’s signs demonstrating that Allah alone creates and governs, and that all causes are subject to His will and governed by His volition. Thus, it is stronger evidence for the opposite of what they claim and, all the more, that no one deserves to be Allah’s partner in any respect.
Moreover, Allah created Adam—peace be upon him—from dust, without a father or mother. If this did not confer upon Adam what the Christians claim for Christ, then it is all the more evident that it does not confer it upon Christ, who was created from a mother without a father. If the claim of sonship and divinity concerning Christ were valid, making the same claim concerning Adam would be all the more warranted. Hence Allah Most High said, “Indeed, the likeness of Jesus before Allah is like that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was. The truth is from your Lord.” That is, what We have told you concerning Christ—peace be upon him—is the truth in its highest degree, for it comes from your Lord. One aspect of His special care for you and your community is that He has recounted to you the accounts of the prophets—peace be upon them.
“So do not be among the doubters”—that is, those who doubt anything your Lord has told you. This verse and those that follow establish a noble principle: whenever evidence establishes something as true and the servant is certain of it—whether in matters of creed or otherwise—he must be certain that everything contradicting it is false and that every specious argument advanced against it is unsound, regardless of whether he is able to refute it. His inability to refute it does not require him to question what he knows, because whatever contradicts the truth is false. Allah Most High said, “What is there beyond the truth except error?”
Through this revealed principle, a person is freed from many difficulties raised by speculative theologians and formulated by logicians. If a person resolves them, that is something beyond what is required of him; otherwise, his duty is to establish the truth with its proofs and call others to it.
