(1–5) “In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. When the sky is split open, * when the stars are scattered, * when the seas burst forth, * when the graves are overturned, * every soul will know what it sent ahead and left behind.”
That is, when the sky splits and breaks open, its stars are scattered (1), and its beauty vanishes; when the seas burst forth and become one sea; and when the graves are overturned, bringing out (2) the dead within them, who are then assembled to stand before Allah and be recompensed for their deeds. Then the veil will be lifted, all that had been hidden will come to light, and every soul will know the gains and losses it bears. There, the wrongdoer will bite his hands when he sees that his deeds are worthless, his scale has become light, the claims arising from his injustices have converged upon him, his evil deeds have been set before him, and he has become certain of eternal misery and everlasting torment (3).
And [there], the God-fearing—those who sent righteous deeds ahead—will attain the supreme triumph, enduring bliss, and deliverance from the torment of Hellfire.
