(33–42) “Then, when the Deafening Blast comes— * on the Day when a man will flee from his brother, * his mother and his father, * his wife and his children— * each of them will have enough concern of his own that Day. * Some faces that Day will be radiant, * laughing and rejoicing, * while other faces that Day will be covered with dust, * overwhelmed by darkness. * Those are the disbelieving, wicked ones.”
That is, when the Blast of the Resurrection comes, whose terror deafens the ears and causes hearts to tremble because of the horrors people will witness that Day and their desperate need for the deeds they sent forth.
“A man will flee” from those dearest to him and most compassionate toward him: “from his brother, his mother and his father, his wife”—meaning his spouse—“and his children.” This is because “each of them will have enough concern of his own that Day”; that is, he will be wholly preoccupied with himself and concerned with securing his own deliverance, paying no attention to anyone else.
At that point, creation will be divided into two groups: the blessed and the wretched. As for the blessed, their faces [that Day] will be “radiant”; that is, joy and delight will be visible upon them because they know that they have been saved and have attained bliss. They will be “laughing and rejoicing.” As for the faces of the wretched, “that Day they will be covered with dust, overwhelmed”—that is, enveloped—“by darkness.” They will thus be blackened, gloomy, and pitch-dark, having despaired of every good and recognized their own wretchedness and ruin.
“Those” who bear this description “are the disbelieving, wicked ones”; that is, those who were ungrateful for Allah’s blessings, denied His signs, and dared to violate His prohibitions. ⦗912⦘
