Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(11–31) “Leave Me to deal with the one I created alone, and to whom I granted ample wealth, and sons ever-present by his side, and for whom I made everything easy. Yet he desires that I should give him more. Never! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our signs. I shall make him endure a grueling ascent.”

These verses were revealed concerning al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīra, who stubbornly resisted the truth and openly confronted Allah and His Messenger with hostility and opposition. Allah therefore censured him as He had censured no one (1) else. This is the recompense of everyone who stubbornly resists the truth and sets himself against it: he will suffer disgrace in this world, while the punishment of the Hereafter is even more humiliating. He said:

“Leave Me to deal with the one I created alone,” meaning: I created him as a solitary individual, without wealth, family, or anything else; then I continued to make him prosper and nurture him (2).

“And to whom I granted ample wealth,” meaning abundant wealth, “and” gave him “sons”—that is, male children—“ever-present by his side,” meaning always with him [at all times], so that he could enjoy their company, have his needs met through them, and enlist their support.

“And for whom I made everything easy,” meaning: I enabled him to enjoy this world and all its means until everything he sought came readily to him and he obtained (3) whatever he desired and wanted. “Yet,” despite these blessings and gifts, “he desires that I should give him more,” meaning that he desires to attain the bliss of the Hereafter just as he attained worldly bliss.

“Never!” That is, matters are not as he hopes; rather, the very opposite of his aim and desire awaits him. This is because “he has been stubbornly hostile to Our signs”; that is, he resisted them. He recognized them and then denied them. They called him to the truth, but he did not submit to them. It was not enough for him to turn away from and forsake them; rather, he began to fight them and strive to invalidate them. Hence He said of him:

(1) Manuscript B reads: “with which He censured no one else.” (2) Manuscript B reads: “I nurture him and give to him.” (3) Manuscript B reads: “and he obtained.”
