(12–14) “Indeed, with Us are shackles and Hellfire, * and food that chokes and a painful punishment, * on the Day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains will become a heap of shifting sand.”
That is, with Us are “shackles”—meaning a severe punishment which We have made a chastisement for whoever continually persists in sin. (1) “And Hellfire”—meaning an intensely hot fire; “and food that chokes,” on account of its bitterness, repulsiveness, loathsome taste, and foul, putrid smell; “and a painful punishment”—meaning an agonizing, horrific punishment. This will be “on the Day when the earth and the mountains will tremble” from the immense terror, “and the mountains”—firmly rooted, solid, and hard—“will become a heap of shifting sand,” like sand cascading and scattering. Thereafter, they will be pulverized and become like scattered dust.
