โThey will be made to see one another. The evildoer will wish that he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day with his children, * his wife and his brother, * his kindred who sheltered him, * and everyone on earthโall of themโif only that would save him. * But no! It is indeed a blazing Flame, * tearing away the limbs, * calling whoever turned his back and turned away, * and amassed wealth and hoarded it.โ
โThe evildoerโโthe one upon whom punishment has become dueโโwill wish that he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day with his children and his wife,โ meaning his spouse, โhis brother, and his kindred,โ meaning his relatives, โwho sheltered himโโthat is, whose customary practice in this world was to support and assist one another. On the Day of Resurrection, however, no one will benefit anyone else, and no one may intercede except by Allahโs permission.
Indeed, even if [the evildoer deserving punishment] were to ransom himself with everything on earth so that it might save him, it would be of no avail.
โBut no!โ That is, there is no recourse and no escape for them. Your Lordโs word has become binding upon those who defiantly disobeyโthat they will not believe (1)โand relatives and friends are no longer of any avail.
โฆ887โฆ โIt is indeed a blazing Flame, tearing away the limbsโโthat is, the outer and inner organs, because of the severity of its punishment (2).
It โcallsโ them to itself (3): โwhoever turned his back and turned away, and amassed wealth and hoarded it.โ That is, he turned his back on following the truth and rejected it, having no interest in it; and he amassed wealth, piling it up and storing it away without spending any of it. The Fire therefore calls them to itself and prepares to blaze up around them.
