Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(4) “Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in ranks, as though they were one solid structure.”

This is an exhortation from Allah to His servants to strive in His cause, as well as instruction on how they should proceed. They should form close, even ranks in battle, with no gaps occurring (1) in their lines. Their ranks should be orderly and well arranged, thereby ensuring uniformity among the fighters, mutual support, intimidation of the enemy, and encouragement of one another. For this reason, whenever the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was present for battle, he formed his Companions into ranks and assigned them their positions, so that no group would rely upon another. Rather, each contingent would attend to its own position and fulfill its duty. In this way, tasks are completed and perfection is attained.

(1) In B: “occurs.”
