﴿10﴾ “Private conversation is only from Satan, so that he may grieve those who believe. Yet he cannot harm them at all except by Allah’s permission. Therefore, let the believers put their trust in Allah.”
Allah Most High says: “Private conversation is only from Satan.” That is, the enemies of the believers confer secretly about them, plotting, deceiving, and seeking to do them harm. This is from Satan, whose schemes are weak and whose plotting is ineffective.
“So that he may grieve those who believe.” This is the aim and purpose of such plotting. “Yet he cannot harm them at all except by Allah’s permission,” for Allah Most High has promised the believers His protection and victory over their enemies. Allah Most High also says: “Evil plotting only backfires on those who devise it.” Thus, no matter how the enemies of Allah, His Messenger, and the believers confer secretly and plot, the harm arising from it (1) will return upon themselves. Nothing can harm the believers except what Allah has decreed and ordained. “Therefore, let the believers put their trust in Allah.” That is, let them rely (2) upon Him and trust His promise, for whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him and take care of his religious and worldly affairs (3).
