(5) “Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be abased, just as those before them were abased. We have certainly sent down clear signs, and the disbelievers will have a humiliating punishment.”

Opposing Allah and His Messenger means defying and disobeying them, especially in grave matters, such as opposing Allah and His Messenger through disbelief and showing hostility toward the allies of Allah.

His words, “will be abased, just as those before them were abased,” mean that they will be humiliated and disgraced, just as those before them were—a fitting recompense.

They have no argument against Allah, for Allah has established His conclusive proof against creation. He has sent down clear signs and proofs that reveal the realities and clarify what is intended. Whoever follows them and acts upon them is among the rightly guided and successful. “The disbelievers” in them “will have a humiliating punishment”—that is, a punishment that will disgrace and abase them. Just as they arrogantly rejected Allah’s signs, Allah will disgrace and abase them.
