(68–70) “Have you considered the water you drink? Is it you who send it down from the rain clouds, or is it We who send it down? If We willed, We could make it bitter. Why, then, are you not grateful?”
After mentioning His favor to His servants in providing food, Allah Most High mentions His favor to them in providing the fresh water they drink. Were Allah not to make it readily accessible to you, you would have no means of obtaining it. He is the One who sends it down from the rain clouds—that is, from the clouds as rain. Allah Most High sends it down, and from it come rivers flowing above and beneath the earth, as well as overflowing pools. It is also among His favors that He has made it fresh and sweet, palatable to drink. Had He willed, He could have made it salty and bitter, repugnant to people and of no benefit. “Why, then, are you not grateful?” to Allah Most High for the blessings He has bestowed upon you.
