Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

That is, when Allah gathers them at the place of Resurrection, He will make known to them their helplessness and weakness, as well as the perfection of His sovereignty and the irresistibility of His will and power. Challenging them, He will say: “O assembly of jinn and humankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and earth”—that is, if you can find an outlet or path by which to escape Allah’s kingdom and sovereignty—“then pass beyond. You will not pass beyond except with authority.” That is, you cannot escape it unless you possess strength, mastery, and perfect power. But how could they ever possess that when they have no power to bring themselves benefit or harm, death or life, or resurrection?! At that standing, no one will speak except by His permission, and nothing but whispers will be heard. There, kings and subjects, leaders and followers, and rich and poor will all be equal.

(35–36) “You both will be assailed by a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not be able to defend yourselves. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny?”

He then mentioned what He has prepared for them at that tremendous standing (1), saying: “You both will be assailed by a flame of fire [and smoke, and you will not be able to defend yourselves. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny?” That is, you both will be assailed by] a pure flame of fire.

“And smoke”—that is, a flame mingled with smoke. The meaning is that these two dreadful things will be sent against you, O assembly of jinn and humankind, and will surround you. You will be unable to defend yourselves, whether through any defender from among yourselves or through anyone besides Allah who might come to your aid.

Since His warning to His servants is a blessing from Him to them and a whip by which He drives them toward the loftiest aims and noblest gifts, He reminded them of this favor (2), saying: “So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny?”

أي: إذا جمعهم الله في موقف القيامة، أخبرهم بعجزهم وضعفهم، وكمال سلطانه، ونفوذ مشيئته وقدرته، فقال معجزا لهم: ﴿يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالإنْسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ تَنْفُذُوا مِنْ أَقْطَارِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ﴾ أي: تجدون منفذا مسلكا تخرجون به عن ملك الله وسلطانه، ﴿فَانْفُذُوا لا تَنْفُذُونَ إِلا بِسُلْطَانٍ﴾ أي: لا تخرجون عنه إلا بقوة وتسلط منكم، وكمال قدرة، وأنى لهم ذلك، وهم لا يملكون لأنفسهم نفعا ولا ضرا، ولا موتا ولا حياة ولا نشورا؟! ففي ذلك الموقف لا يتكلم أحد إلا بإذنه، ولا تسمع إلا همسا، وفي ذلك الموقف يستوي الملوك والمماليك، والرؤساء والمرءوسون، والأغنياء والفقراء. ⦗٨٣١⦘ ﴿٣٥-٣٦﴾ ﴿يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِنْ نَارٍ وَنُحَاسٌ فَلا تَنْتَصِرَانِ * فَبِأَيِّ آلاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ﴾ . ثم ذكر ما أعد لهم في ذلك الموقف العظيم (١) فقال: ﴿يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شواظ من نار [ونحاس فلا تنصران فبأي آلاء ربكما تكذبان﴾ أي: يرسل عليكما] لهب صاف من النار. ﴿ونحاس﴾ وهو اللهب، الذي قد خالطه الدخان، والمعنى أن هذين الأمرين الفظيعين يرسلان عليكما يا معشر الجن والإنس، ويحيطان بكما فلا تنتصران، لا بناصر من أنفسكم، ولا بأحد ينصركم من دون الله. ولما كان تخويفه لعباده نعمة منه عليهم، وسوطا يسوقهم به إلى أعلى المطالب وأشرف المواهب، امتن عليهم (٢) فقال: ﴿فَبِأَيِّ آلاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ﴾
