“Their eyes downcast, they will emerge from the graves as though they were scattered locusts, * rushing toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, ‘This is a difficult day.’”
“Their eyes downcast”: this is because of the terror and fear that will have reached their hearts, causing them to become submissive and abased; consequently, their eyes will be downcast.
“They will emerge from the graves”—that is, the burial places—“as though they were,” because of their sheer numbers and their surging into one another, “scattered locusts”; that is, dispersed throughout the earth in tremendous numbers. “Rushing toward the Caller” means hastening to answer the caller’s summons (1). This indicates that the Caller will summon them and command them to appear for the standing on the Day of Resurrection. They will heed his summons and hasten to answer him. “The disbelievers”—those whose punishment will now be upon them—“will say, ‘This is a difficult day,’” as Allah, Exalted is He, says: “For the disbelievers, far from easy.” ⦗825⦘[The implication is that it will be easy and effortless for the believers] (2).
