(59–60) “Indeed, those who have done wrong will have a share like the share of their fellows, so let them not ask Me to hasten it. Woe, then, to those who disbelieve, because of the Day they have been promised.”
That is, those who wronged and rejected (1) Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—will receive a “share” of punishment and chastisement; namely, a portion and allotted measure like that which befell their fellow wrongdoers and deniers.
“So let them not ask Me to hasten it”—the punishment—for Allah’s established way in dealing with nations is always the same. Every denier who persists in denial without repenting and turning back to Allah will inevitably be overtaken by punishment, even if it is delayed for a time. Allah therefore warned them of the Day of Resurrection, saying: “Woe, then, to those who disbelieve, because of the Day they have been promised.” This is the Day of Resurrection, on which they have been promised various forms of punishment and chastisement, chains and shackles. They will have no one to aid them or deliver them from the punishment of Allah Most High [we seek refuge in Allah from it].
