(74–78) “Indeed, the evildoers will remain forever in the torment of Hell. It will not be lightened for them, and therein they will be in despair. We did not wrong them; rather, it was they who were the wrongdoers. They will cry, ‘O Mālik, let your Lord put an end to us!’ He will say, ‘You are here to remain.’ We certainly brought you the truth, but most of you were averse to the truth.”
“Indeed, the evildoers”—those who committed evil through their disbelief and denial—“will remain forever in the torment of Hell.” That is, they will be engulfed by it, with torment surrounding them on every side. They will remain there forever and never leave it.
The torment “will not be lightened for them” for even a moment, either by being removed or by having its severity reduced, “and therein they will be in despair.” That is, they will despair of every good and have no hope of relief. Thus, they will call upon their Lord, saying: “Our Lord, take us out of it. If we ever return to evil, then we will truly be wrongdoers.” He will say, “Remain despised therein, and do not speak to Me.” This tremendous punishment is for what their own hands sent forth and for the wrong they did to themselves. Allah did not wrong them or punish them without sin or wrongdoing.
“They will cry,” while in the Fire, hoping they might obtain some respite, “O Mālik, let your Lord put an end to us!” That is, let Him cause us to die so that we may find relief, for we are suffering intense anguish and severe torment that we have neither the patience nor the endurance to bear. Mālik, the keeper of the Fire, “will say” to them—when they ask him to beseech Allah to put an end to them—“You are here to remain.” That is, you will abide therein and never leave it. Thus, they will not obtain what they sought. Rather, he will answer them with the very opposite of their desire, adding anguish to their anguish.
He will then rebuke them for what they did, saying: “We certainly brought you the truth,” which required you to follow it. Had you followed it, you would have triumphed and attained happiness. “But most of you were averse to the truth,” and for that reason you have fallen into misery after which there will be no happiness.
