Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

“Indeed, he is truly a sign of the Hour, so have no doubt about it, and follow Me. This is a straight path. Do not let Satan turn you away. He is indeed an avowed enemy to you. When Jesus came with clear proofs, he said, ‘I have come to you with wisdom and to clarify for you some of what you differ about. So fear Allah and obey me. Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.’ Yet the factions among them fell into disagreement. So woe to the wrongdoers because of the punishment of a painful Day.”

“Indeed, he is truly a sign of the Hour”—that is, Jesus, peace be upon him, is evidence of the Hour: the One who was able to create him from a mother without a father is able to resurrect the dead from their graves. Alternatively, it means that Jesus, peace be upon him, will descend at the end of time, and his descent will be one of the signs of the Hour. “So have no doubt about it”—that is, do not doubt that the Hour will come, for doubting it is disbelief. “And follow Me” by complying with what I have commanded you and avoiding what I have forbidden you. “This is a straight path” leading to Allah Most High.

“Do not let Satan turn you away” from what Allah has commanded you, for Satan “is an enemy to you,” intent on leading you astray and exerting his utmost effort to do so.

“When Jesus came with clear proofs” demonstrating the truth of his prophethood and the soundness of what he brought them—⦗769⦘ such as raising the dead, healing those born blind and lepers, and other such signs—“he said” to the Children of Israel, “I have come to you with wisdom,” namely prophethood and knowledge of what ought to be done and how it ought to be done, “and to clarify for you some of what you differ about.” That is, I will explain the correct position and resolution concerning it, thereby removing your confusion. Thus Jesus, peace be upon him, came to complete and perfect the law of Moses, peace be upon him, and the rulings of the Torah. He also brought certain concessions that gave them every reason to submit to him and accept what he brought them. “So fear Allah and obey me”—that is, worship Allah alone, without partner; comply with His commands, avoid His prohibitions, believe in me, affirm my truthfulness, and obey me.

“Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.” This affirms Allah’s oneness in Lordship by acknowledging that Allah nurtures all His creation with every kind of blessing, outward and inward. It also affirms His exclusive right to worship by commanding that Allah alone, without partner, be worshiped. Jesus, peace be upon him, thereby declares that he is one of Allah’s servants, contrary to what the Christians say of him: “He is the son of Allah or the third of three.” It further declares that what has been mentioned is a straight path leading to Allah and His Paradise.

When Jesus, peace be upon him, brought them this, “the factions among them fell into disagreement”—those who had banded together in denial. Each made a false claim about Jesus, peace be upon him, and rejected what he brought, except those believers whom Allah guided, who testified that he was a messenger, affirmed everything he brought, and said that he was Allah’s servant and messenger.

“So woe to the wrongdoers because of the punishment of a painful Day.” That is, how grievous will the sorrow of the wrongdoers be, and how immense their loss on that Day.”
