Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(33–35) “Were it not that people would become a single community, We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful roofs of silver for their houses, and stairways upon which they ascend. *”

Allah Most High tells us that this world is worth nothing in His sight, and that were it not for His kindness and mercy toward His servants—which He allows nothing to override—He would have granted those who disbelieve immense abundance in this world. He would have made “roofs of silver for their houses, and stairways”—that is, stairways of silver—“upon which they ascend” to their rooftops.
