Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(44–46) “Whoever Allah leaves astray will have no protector after Him. You will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying, ‘Is there any way to return?’ *”

Allah, Exalted is He, informs us that He alone guides and leaves astray, and that “whoever Allah leaves astray” because of his wrongdoing “will have no protector after Him” to take charge of his affairs and guide him.

“You will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment”—a dreadful and appalling sight, severe and horrific—displaying immense remorse and grief over their past deeds and “saying, ‘Is there any way to return?’” That is, is there any way or means for us to return to this world so that we may act differently from how we used to act? This is a request for something impossible and unattainable.
