(44) โHad We made it a Quran in a non-Arabic language, they would certainly have said, โWhy were its verses not clearly explained? A non-Arabic Book and an Arab messenger?โ Say, โFor those who believe, it is guidance and healing. But as for those who do not believe, there is deafness in their ears, and it is blindness to them. Those are being called from a distant place.โโ
Allah Most High tells of His grace and generosity in revealing an Arabic Book to an Arab Messenger in the language of his people so that he could make it clear to them. This gave them all the more reason to draw enrichment from it, embrace it, and submit to it. Had He made it a Quran in a language other than Arabic, the deniers would have objected and said, โWhy were its verses not clearly explained?โ That is, why were its verses not made plain, clarified, and expounded? โA non-Arabic Book and an Arab messenger?โ That is, how could Muhammad be an Arab while the Book was non-Arabic? This would not be fitting. Thus, Allah Most High removed from His Book everything that might give the advocates of falsehood grounds for doubt and described it with every quality that should lead them to submit. Yet the believers whom Allah enabled to accept the truth benefited from it and were elevated, while everyone else experienced the opposite.
He therefore said: โFor those who believe, it is guidance and healing.โ That is, it guides them to the way of right conduct and the straight path, and teaches them beneficial knowledge through which complete guidance is attained. It is also a healing for ailments of the body and heart, because it restrains them from evil character and the vilest deeds, and urges them to sincere repentance, which washes away sins and heals the heart.
โBut as for those who do not believeโ in the Quran, โthere is deafness in their earsโโthat is, they are deaf to hearing it and turn away from itโโand it is blindness to them.โ That is, they perceive no right guidance through it, are not guided by it, and it only increases them in error. Whenever they reject the truth, they add blindness to their blindness and waywardness to their waywardness.
โThose are being called from a distant place.โ That is, they are called and invited to faith, but they do not respond. They are like someone being called while far away, who neither hears the caller nor answers the one calling. The point is that those who do not believe in the Quran do not benefit from its guidance, perceive by its light, or gain any good from it, because through their rejection and disbelief they have closed the doors of guidance upon themselves.
