(43) “Nothing is said to you except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is possessed of vast forgiveness and painful punishment.”
That is, nothing is said to you, O Messenger, by those who deny you and stubbornly oppose you except the same kind of things that were said to the messengers before you. Indeed, they may even have uttered exactly the same words. All the nations that denied their messengers expressed astonishment at their call to sincere devotion to Allah and to worship Him alone, without any partner, and they rejected this by every means at their disposal. They said, “You are nothing but human beings like us,” demanded from their messengers signs that they were under no obligation to produce, and made other such statements characteristic of those who deny the truth. Since their hearts resembled one another in disbelief, their words likewise resembled one another. The messengers, peace be upon them, patiently endured their harm and denial, so be patient as those before you were patient.
He then called them to repentance and to undertake what leads to forgiveness, and warned them against persisting in error. He said: “Indeed, your Lord is possessed of vast forgiveness,” by which He erases every sin for whoever abandons it and repents, “and painful punishment” for whoever persists and acts arrogantly.
