Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

“They will say, ‘Did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will say, ‘Then call upon Him yourselves—but the supplication of the disbelievers is only in vain.’”

“They will say, ‘Yes’”—they did come to us with clear proofs, and Allah’s conclusive proof was established against us, but we acted unjustly and stubbornly opposed the truth after it had become clear. “They will say”—that is, the keepers of Hell will say to its inhabitants, disavowing any supplication or intercession on their behalf—“Then call upon Him yourselves.” But will this supplication avail anything or not?

Allah Most High says: “But the supplication of the disbelievers is only in vain”—that is, it is false and futile, because disbelief nullifies all deeds and prevents supplication from being answered.
