(5–7) “He created the heavens and the earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night, and He has subjected the sun and the moon—each running for an appointed term. Behold, He is the Almighty, the Ever-Forgiving.”
The Most High informs us that He “created the heavens and the earth”—that is, with wisdom and for a beneficial purpose: to command and forbid His servants, and to reward or punish them.
“He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night.” That is, He causes each to enter upon the other and take its place. They do not coexist; rather, when one arrives, the other withdraws from its dominion.
“And He has subjected the sun and the moon” in an orderly fashion and set them upon a regulated course. “Each”—both the sun and the moon—“running,” in accordance with the subjection imposed by the Most High, “for an appointed term.” This is when the present abode comes to an end and is destroyed. Allah will then destroy its instruments, its sun, and its moon, and bring creation forth anew so that they may settle in the everlasting abode: Paradise or the Fire.
“Behold, He is the Almighty,” whom none can overcome, who subdues all things, and whom nothing can resist. It is by His might that He brought these immense creations into existence and subjected them to run by His command. He is “the Ever-Forgiving” of the sins of His believing servants who repent, as the Most High says: “Indeed, I am ever forgiving toward whoever repents, believes, acts righteously, and then remains rightly guided.” He is ever forgiving toward those who associated partners with Him even after witnessing His tremendous signs, but then repented and returned to Him.
