Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(49–54) “Indeed, the God-fearing shall have an excellent return: Gardens of perpetual residence, whose gates will be open for them. Reclining therein, they will call for abundant fruit and drink. And with them will be women of restrained gaze, all of equal age. This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning. Indeed, this is Our provision, which will never be exhausted.”

That is: Every believing man and woman who fears their Lord by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions “shall have an excellent return”—that is, a fine destination and a most pleasing place to which to return.

He then explains and details it, saying: “Gardens of perpetual residence”—gardens in which they will abide and, because of their perfection and the fullness of their bliss, will desire no substitute. They will neither leave them nor be expelled from them.

“Whose gates will be open for them”—that is, the gates of their homes and dwellings will be opened for their sake. They will not need to open them themselves; rather, they will be served. This also indicates complete security, for there will be nothing in the Gardens of perpetual residence on account of which their gates would need to be closed.

“Reclining therein” upon adorned couches and in splendid sitting places, “they will call therein”—that is, they will command their servants to bring them—“abundant fruit and drink,” comprising everything their souls desire and their eyes delight in. This indicates the perfection of their bliss, comfort, tranquility, and pleasure.

“And with them,” from among their wives, will be the maidens of Paradise, “women of restrained gaze.” Their gazes will be fixed exclusively upon their husbands, and their husbands’ gazes upon them, because of the beauty of them all, the love each has for the other, and their lack of desire for anyone else. Neither will desire anyone in place of their spouse or seek any substitute for them. They will be “all of equal age”—that is, at the same age: the most balanced, beautiful, and delightful prime of youth.

“This is what you are promised,” O God-fearing people, “for the Day of Reckoning,” as a reward for your righteous deeds.

“Indeed, this is Our provision,” which We have bestowed upon the inhabitants of the abode of bliss, “which will never be exhausted”—that is, it will never cease. Rather, it will endure permanently at all times and continually increase at every moment.

None of this is too great for the gracious Lord: the Compassionate, the Merciful, the Benevolent, the Most Generous, the All-Encompassing, the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy, the Most Gentle, the Most Compassionate, the King, the Requiter, the Majestic, the Beautiful, the Bestower of favors—Possessor of resplendent bounty and unceasing generosity, whose blessings cannot be counted and whose beneficence cannot be fully comprehended.
