“And We granted him his family and as many more with them, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for people of understanding. * Take in your hand a bundle, strike with it, and do not break your oath. Indeed, We found him patient. What an excellent servant! Indeed, he was ever turning back to Us.”
“And We granted him his family”: It is said that Allah Most High revived them for him “and as many more with them” in this world. Allah made him wealthy and granted him immense wealth, “as a mercy from Us” to Our servant Job. Because he patiently endured, We rewarded him out of Our mercy both in this world and in the Hereafter.
“and a reminder for people of understanding”—so that people of understanding might remember Job’s condition and take heed, knowing that whoever patiently endures affliction will be rewarded by Allah Most High both in this world and in the Hereafter, and that He answers his supplication when he calls upon Him.
“Take in your hand a bundle”—that is, a bundle of date-palm stalks—“strike with it, and do not break your oath.”
The exegetes said: During his illness and affliction, Job became angry with his wife over some matter and swore that, if Allah healed him, he would strike her one hundred lashes. When Allah healed him—and his wife had been righteous and had treated him well—Allah had mercy on her and on him. He therefore instructed him to strike her once with a bundle containing one hundred date-palm stalks, thereby fulfilling his oath.
“Indeed, We found him”—that is, Job—“patient.” In other words, We tested him with severe affliction, and he patiently endured it for the sake of Allah Most High.
“What an excellent servant!” He fulfilled servitude in all its degrees, whether in prosperity or adversity, hardship or ease.
“Indeed, he was ever turning back to Us”—that is, he repeatedly turned to Allah in all his religious and worldly needs. He frequently remembered his Lord, supplicated Him, loved Him, and devoted himself to Him in worship.
