(41–44) “And remember Our servant Job, when he called upon his Lord: ‘Satan has afflicted me with hardship and torment.’ * ‘Strike the ground with your foot. Here is cool water for washing and drinking.’”
That is: “Remember” in this Book, full of remembrance, “Our servant Job” with the finest mention, and praise him with the finest praise. When adversity afflicted him, he patiently endured it, complained to none but his Lord, and sought refuge in Him alone.
Thus, “he called upon his Lord,” supplicating Him and complaining to Him—not to anyone else. He said: “My Lord, Satan has afflicted me with hardship and torment”—that is, with an affliction that was arduous, exhausting, and tormenting. Satan had been given power over his body and blew into it until it became ulcerated and later festered, causing his condition to grow severe. His family and wealth likewise perished.
He was told: “Strike the ground with your foot”—that is, strike it so that a spring may gush forth for you, from which you may wash and drink, thereby removing the harm and suffering from you. He did so, the harm departed from him, and Allah Most High healed him.
