(16–17) “They say, ‘Our Lord, hasten for us our allotted share before the Day of Reckoning.’”
That is, out of their ignorance and obstinate rejection of the truth, these deniers called for the punishment to be hastened, saying: “Our Lord, hasten for us our allotted share”—meaning our portion and whatever punishment has been apportioned to us—“before the Day of Reckoning.” They persisted in saying this and claimed, “Muhammad, if you are truthful, then the proof of your truthfulness is that you bring the punishment upon us.” So He said to His Messenger:
﴿١٦ - ١٧﴾ ﴿وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا عَجِّلْ لَنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ﴾ .
أي: قال هؤلاء المكذبون، من جهلهم ومعاندتهم الحق، مستعجلين للعذاب: ﴿رَبَّنَا عَجِّلْ لَنَا قِطَّنَا﴾ أي: قسطنا وما قسم لنا من العذاب عاجلا ﴿قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ﴾ ولَجُّوا في هذا القول، وزعموا أنك يا محمد، إن كنت صادقا، فعلامة صدقك أن تأتينا بالعذاب، فقال لرسوله:
