Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(55–58) “Indeed, on that Day the people of Paradise will be joyfully occupied. * They and their spouses will be in the shade, reclining on couches. * There they will have fruit and whatever they request. * ‘Peace!’—a word from a Merciful Lord.”

[After Allah Most High stated] that each person will be recompensed only for what they did, He described the recompense of the two groups. He began with the reward of the people of Paradise, informing us that on that Day they will be “joyfully occupied”—that is, engaged in something that brings joy and pleasure to the soul, comprising everything souls desire, eyes delight in, and people could wish for.

Among these pleasures is consummation with beautiful virgins, as He says, “They and their spouses”—the wide-eyed maidens, who combine beauty of face and body with beauty of character. ⦗698⦘ “In the shade, reclining on couches”—that is, upon beds adorned with beautiful, richly decorated coverings. They will recline upon them in perfect comfort, serenity, and pleasure.

“There they will have fruit”: abundant fruit of every delicious kind, including grapes, figs, pomegranates, and others. “And whatever they request”—that is, whatever they ask for. Whatever they seek or wish for, they will obtain.

They will also have “Peace,” granted to them “from a Merciful Lord.” This means that the exalted Lord will speak to the people of Paradise and greet them with peace. The addition of “a word” lends this further emphasis. Once the Merciful Lord greets them with peace, they will attain perfect safety and well-being in every respect. They will receive a greeting above which there is no greater greeting and a bliss unlike any other.

Just imagine the greeting of the King of kings—the magnificent Lord, the Compassionate, the Merciful—to the inhabitants of His abode of honor, upon whom He has bestowed His pleasure, never again to be displeased with them. Were it not that Allah Most High had decreed that they would neither die nor have their hearts leap from their places out of joy, delight, and happiness, this would indeed happen.

We therefore ask our Lord not to deprive us of that bliss and to grant us the delight of gazing upon His noble Face.

﴿٥٥ - ٥٨﴾ ﴿إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ الْيَوْمَ فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُونَ * هُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُمْ فِي ظِلالٍ عَلَى الأرَائِكِ مُتَّكِئُونَ * لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَلَهُمْ مَا يَدَّعُونَ * سَلامٌ قَوْلا مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ﴾ . [لما ذكر تعالى] أن كل أحد لا يجازى إلا ما عمله، ذكر جزاء الفريقين، فبدأ بجزاء أهل الجنة، وأخبر أنهم في ذلك اليوم ﴿فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُونَ﴾ أي: في شغل مفكه للنفس، مُلِذِّ لها، من كل ما تهواه النفوس، وتلذه العيون، ويتمناه المتمنون. ومن ذلك افتضاض العذارى الجميلات، كما قال: ﴿هُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُمْ﴾ من الحور العين، اللاتي قد ⦗٦٩٨⦘ جمعن حسن الوجوه والأبدان وحسن الأخلاق. ﴿فِي ظِلالٍ عَلَى الأرَائِكِ﴾ أي: على السرر المزينة باللباس المزخرف الحسن. ﴿مُتَّكِئُونَ﴾ عليها، اتكاء على كمال الراحة والطمأنينة واللذة. ﴿لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ﴾ كثيرة، من جميع أنواع الثمار اللذيذة، من عنب وتين ورمان، وغيرها، ﴿وَلَهُمْ مَا يَدَّعُونَ﴾ أي: يطلبون، فمهما طلبوه وتمنوه أدركوه. ولهم أيضا ﴿سَلامٌ﴾ حاصل لهم ﴿مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ﴾ ففي هذا كلام الرب تعالى لأهل الجنة وسلامه عليهم، وأكده بقوله: ﴿قَوْلا﴾ وإذا سلم عليهم الرب الرحيم، حصلت لهم السلامة التامة من جميع الوجوه، وحصلت لهم التحية، التي لا تحية أعلى منها، ولا نعيم مثلها، فما ظنك بتحية ملك الملوك، الرب العظيم، الرءوف الرحيم، لأهل دار كرامته، الذي أحل عليهم رضوانه، فلا يسخط عليهم أبدا، فلولا أن الله تعالى قدر أن لا يموتوا، أو تزول قلوبهم عن أماكنها من الفرح والبهجة والسرور، لحصل ذلك. فنرجو ربنا أن لا يحرمنا ذلك النعيم، وأن يمتعنا بالنظر إلى وجهه الكريم.
