Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(51–54) “The Trumpet will be blown, and at once they will hasten from their graves to their Lord. * They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who has raised us from our resting place?’ This is what the Most Merciful promised, and the messengers spoke the truth. * It will be but a single Blast, and at once they will all be brought before Us. * So today no soul will be wronged in the least, and you will be recompensed only for what you used to do.”

The first blowing is the blowing of terror and death, whereas this is the blowing of resurrection and rising. When the Trumpet is blown, they will emerge from their graves and burial places, hastening to their Lord—that is, rushing to stand before Him, unable to slow down or remain behind. In that state, the deniers will be overcome by grief and will express their anguish and remorse, saying, “Woe to us! Who has raised us from our resting place?” That is, from our sleep in the graves. Some hadiths state that those in the graves will experience a period of sleep shortly before the Trumpet is blown. They will then be answered, and it will be said [to them:], “This is what the Most Merciful promised, and the messengers spoke the truth.” That is, this is what Allah promised you and what the messengers promised you; thus, their truthfulness will become evident before their very eyes.

Do not suppose that the Most Merciful is mentioned here merely to report His promise. Rather, it also conveys that, on that tremendous Day, they will behold such mercy from Him as no mind could imagine and no reckoner could reckon. This is like His words, “True sovereignty that Day will belong to the Most Merciful,” and, “Voices will be hushed before the Most Merciful,” as well as similar passages in which His name, the Most Merciful, is mentioned in this context.

The resurrection from the graves “will be but a single Blast”: Isrāfīl will blow the Trumpet, whereupon the bodies will come to life, “and at once they will all be brought before Us”—the first and the last, humankind and jinn—so that they may be called to account for their deeds.

“So today no soul will be wronged in the least”: nothing will be deducted from its good deeds, nor will anything be added to its evil deeds. “And you will be recompensed only for what you used to do,” whether good or evil. Whoever finds good should praise Allah for it, and whoever finds otherwise should blame no one but himself.
