(30–31) “O wives of the Prophet, whoever among you commits a manifest indecency will have her punishment doubled; and that is easy for Allah.”

After they chose Allah, His Messenger, and the Hereafter, He mentioned the multiplication of both their reward and—were such a thing to occur from them—their burden and sin, so that they would increase in vigilance and gratitude to Allah Most High. He therefore ordained a twofold punishment for any of them who committed a manifest indecency.
