(1–3) “In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. O Prophet, fear Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Allah is indeed All-Knowing, All-Wise. Follow what is revealed to you from your Lord. Allah is indeed fully aware of all that you do. Put your trust in Allah, for Allah is sufficient as Trustee.”
That is: O you whom Allah has blessed with prophethood, singled out for His revelation, and favored above all creation, give thanks for your Lord’s blessing upon you by fearing Him as you ought. You have more reason to do so than anyone else, and a greater measure of it is required of you than of anyone else. Therefore, carry out His commands, refrain from what He has forbidden, convey His messages, deliver His revelation to His servants, and offer sincere counsel to all people.
Let nothing deter you from this objective or turn you away from it. Do not obey any disbeliever who openly displays hostility toward Allah and His Messenger, nor any hypocrite who conceals denial and unbelief while outwardly displaying the opposite.
Such people are the true enemies. Do not obey them in any matter that undermines and contradicts the fear of Allah, and do not follow their whims, lest they lead you away from what is right.
“And”—rather—“follow what is revealed to you from your Lord,” for it is guidance and mercy. In doing so, hope for your Lord’s reward, for He is fully aware of what you do and will recompense you according to the good and evil He knows of you.
If the thought occurs to you that, should you refuse to follow their misleading whims, they may harm you or people’s guidance may be impaired, banish it from your mind. Counter it with what can overcome both it and every other concern: trust in Allah. Rely upon your Lord as one who possesses no power in himself to cause harm or bring benefit, nor any power over death, life, or resurrection. Rely upon Him for deliverance from their evil and for establishing the religion you have been commanded to uphold. Trust Allah to bring this about, whatever the circumstances may be.
“Allah is sufficient as Trustee.” Affairs may be entrusted to Him, and He will attend to them in the manner best for His servant. This is because He knows His servant’s welfare in ways the servant does not, has the power to deliver it to him in ways the servant cannot, and is more merciful to His servant than the servant is to himself or his parents are to him, and more tender toward him than anyone else—⦗658⦘ especially toward His elect servants, whom He has always nurtured through His benevolence and upon whom He continually bestows His outward and inward blessings. This is all the more so when He has commanded the servant to commit his affairs to Him and has given him His promise. Then do not ask how readily every affair is facilitated, every difficulty eased, grave ordeals made light, distresses removed, affairs and needs fulfilled, blessings sent down, calamities averted, and evils lifted.
There you will see the weak servant who has entrusted his affair to his Master accomplishing feats that an entire nation of people could not accomplish. Allah has made easy [for him] (1) what even the strongest of men found difficult. It is Allah whose help is sought.
