(14–15) “We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them for a thousand years less fifty. Then the Flood overtook them while they were wrongdoers.*”
Allah Most High informs us of His judgment and wisdom in punishing (1) the nations that rejected the truth, ⦗628⦘ and that Allah sent His servant and Messenger Noah, peace and blessings be upon him, to his people, calling them to affirm Allah’s oneness and worship Him alone, and warning them against rival gods and idols. “He remained among them” as a prophet calling them to Allah “for a thousand years less fifty.” Throughout that time, he never ceased calling them or wearied of sincerely counseling them. He called them night and day, privately and openly, yet they neither took the right course nor accepted guidance. Rather, they persisted in their disbelief and transgression until their prophet Noah—despite his immense patience, forbearance, and endurance—prayed against them, saying, “My Lord, do not leave on earth a single disbelieving inhabitant.” “Then the Flood overtook them”—that is, the water that descended abundantly from the sky and gushed forcefully from the earth—“while they were wrongdoers” and deserving of punishment.
