(212) “The life of this world has been made alluring to those who disbelieve, and they ridicule those who believe. But those who are mindful of Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. Allah provides for whomever He wills without measure.”
Allah Most High informs us that the life of this world has been made alluring to those who disbelieve in Allah, His signs, and His messengers and who refuse to submit to His law. It has been made attractive to their eyes and hearts, so they are content with it and find satisfaction in it. All their desires, aims, and deeds are devoted to it. They turn toward it, dedicate themselves to attaining it, exalt it and those who share their conduct, while looking down upon the believers and mocking them. They say, “Are these the ones whom Allah has favored from among us?”
This stems from their feeble minds and limited outlook. This world is a realm of trial and testing, and hardship befalls both believers and disbelievers in it. Yet when a believer suffers something unpleasant in this world, he remains patient and seeks Allah’s reward. Through his faith and patience, Allah lightens for him what He does not lighten for others.
What truly matters—what matters above all—and where genuine distinction lies is the everlasting abode. Allah Most High therefore says: “But those who are mindful of Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection.” Those mindful of Allah will occupy the highest ranks, enjoying every kind of bliss, delight, joy, and happiness.
The disbelievers will be beneath them in the lowest depths, suffering every kind of punishment, humiliation, and unending misery. Thus, this verse consoles the believers and censures the disbelievers. Since provisions in this world and the Hereafter come only by Allah’s decree and can be attained only by His will, Allah Most High says: “Allah provides for whomever He wills without measure.” Worldly provision is granted to both believers and disbelievers. As for the provision of the hearts—knowledge, faith, love of Allah, fear of Him, hope in Him, and the like—He grants it only to those whom He loves.
