(8) “We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me you will all return, and I will inform you of what you used to do.”
That is, We have commanded man and enjoined upon him goodness toward his parents: to honor them and treat them kindly in word and deed, to remain steadfast in doing so, and neither disobey nor mistreat them in word or deed.
“But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge”—and no one can have any knowledge that associating partners with Allah is valid. This underscores the enormity of associating partners with Allah. “Do not obey them. To Me you will all return, and I will inform you of what you used to do.” Thus, I will repay you for your deeds. So honor your parents and give precedence to obeying them, except where obedience to Allah and His Messenger is concerned, for that takes precedence over everything.
