Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

“Whoever comes with a good deed will have something better than it, and they will be secure from the terror of that Day. * But whoever comes with an evil deed will be cast face-first into the Fire. Are you recompensed for anything except what you used to do?”

Then He explained the manner of His recompense, saying: “Whoever comes with a good deed”—this is a generic expression encompassing every good deed, whether of word, action, or heart—“will have something better than it.” This is the minimum degree of superiority (1).

“And they will be secure from the terror of that Day.” That is, they will be safe from the event on account of which creation will be terrified, even though they will experience terror along with them.

“But whoever comes with an evil deed”—this is a generic expression encompassing every evil deed—“will be cast face-first into the Fire.” That is, they will be thrown into the Fire upon their faces, and it will be said to them: “Are you recompensed for anything except what you used to do?”

(1) The shaykh’s pen slipped to the verse from Sūrat al-Anām, “He shall have ten times its like,” and he interpreted the passage on that basis.
