(207) “And among the people is one who sells himself, seeking Allah’s pleasure. And Allah is Most Compassionate to His servants.”
Such are those granted success: they have sold their very selves, counted them of little worth, and offered them up in pursuit of Allah’s pleasure and in hope of His reward. They have thus tendered the price to One fully able to pay, unfailingly true to His promise, and compassionate toward His servants. Indeed, it was out of His compassion and mercy that He enabled them to do so, and He has promised to fulfill His obligation to them. He says: “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise”—to the end of the verse.
In this verse, He states that they sold themselves and offered them up, and He speaks of His compassion, which ensures that they attain what they sought and are granted what they desired. After this, ask no more about what they will receive from the Most Generous, or about the triumph and honor they will attain (1).
