“Of what benefit will all their former enjoyments be to them?”—the pleasures and desires they enjoyed. That is, what could possibly avail or benefit them when those things have passed away, become void, and vanished, leaving their consequences behind, while their punishment is multiplied because of the lengthy respite? The point is to beware of the punishment befalling them and of their becoming deserving of it. As for whether it is hastened or delayed, that is of no importance and makes no difference.
